Vlad the Impaler

Vlad III was a 15th-century prince of Wallachia whose rule was marked by violent punishments and resistance to Ottoman expansion. His epithet comes from his use of impalement.

Wallachia: A historical principality between the Carpathian Mountains and the lower Danube, now part of Romania. Vlad ruled this principality during repeated struggles for its throne.
Impalement: An execution method in which a person is pierced with a stake. This punishment gave Vlad his enduring epithet.
