Vladikavkaz

Vladikavkaz is a city in southwestern Russia and the capital of the Republic of North Ossetia–Alania. It stands on the Terek River near the Caucasus Mountains.

Fortress of Vladikavkaz: A Russian military fortress founded in 1784 at the entrance to the Darial Gorge. The settlement grew around this fortress, established to secure Russia’s route through the Caucasus.
North Ossetia–Alania: A republic in southwestern Russia, situated on the northern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains. Vladikavkaz is the republic’s capital and largest city.
Transcaucasian Highway: A highway crossing the central Caucasus between Russia and Georgia through the Roki Tunnel. It connects Vladikavkaz with South Ossetia and provides a major cross-mountain route.

South Ossetia War (2008): A 2008 war between Georgia and Russia centered on South Ossetia and nearby areas. Vladikavkaz served as a key Russian military and logistical hub during the conflict.
Georgievsk Treaty: A 1783 agreement that made the Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti a Russian protectorate. The treaty preceded Russia’s military expansion that established the fortress at Vladikavkaz.
Caucasus Mountains: A mountain range between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, dividing Europe and Asia in some geographical conventions. The range forms the landscape immediately south of Vladikavkaz.
