Vladimir Vernadsky

Vladimir Vernadsky (1863–1945) was a Russian and Soviet mineralogist and geochemist who developed the modern concept of the biosphere and helped establish geochemistry as a discipline.

Geochemistry: The study of the chemical composition of Earth and the processes that distribute its elements. This discipline provided Vernadsky’s framework for tracing matter through living and nonliving systems.
Biogeochemical cycle: A pathway through which chemical elements circulate between organisms and Earth’s nonliving reservoirs. These cycles express how living matter redistributes elements across the biosphere.
Alexander von Humboldt: A Prussian naturalist who studied the interconnected physical and biological features of the Earth. Humboldt’s integrated view of nature anticipated Vernadsky’s planetary synthesis.
University of Saint Petersburg: A Russian university founded in 1724 and among the country’s oldest institutions of higher education. Vernadsky studied natural sciences there and began his scientific career in Russia.
Gaia hypothesis: The hypothesis that life and its environment interact to regulate conditions on Earth. Like Vernadsky’s biosphere, it treats life as a planetary influence, but proposes system-level regulation.

Carbon cycle: The movement of carbon among the atmosphere, oceans, organisms, soils, and rocks. Carbon circulation illustrates the planetary scale of biological and geological exchange.
Vasily Dokuchaev: A Russian geographer and soil scientist who established soil science as a field. Dokuchaev’s study of soil as a natural body influenced Vernadsky’s Earth-system thinking.
Radium Institute: A research institute in Petrograd established in 1922 to study radioactivity and related sciences. Vernadsky directed the institute and helped organize research into radioactive elements.
Anthropocene: A proposed geological epoch marked by substantial human influence on Earth systems. The concept echoes Vernadsky’s claim that human activity can become a geological force.
