Vladimir Vysotsky

Vladimir Vysotsky (1938–1980) was a Soviet singer-songwriter, poet, and actor whose songs, often performed with guitar, circulated widely despite limited official recognition.

Taganka Theatre: A Moscow theater known for experimental productions under director Yuri Lyubimov. Vysotsky became one of its leading actors and performed there from 1964.
Yuri Lyubimov: A Soviet and Russian theater director who led Moscow’s Taganka Theatre for decades. Lyubimov directed the theater where Vysotsky built much of his stage career.
Russian bard song: A Soviet-era tradition of author-performed songs, often accompanied by acoustic guitar. Vysotsky became one of the tradition’s most prominent and distinctive voices.
Soviet unofficial culture: Creative activity in the Soviet Union produced outside or at the margins of state institutions. Vysotsky’s songs reached a vast audience while remaining largely outside official cultural channels.
