Võ Nguyên Giáp

Võ Nguyên Giáp (1911–2013) was a Vietnamese general and communist politician who commanded forces in the First Indochina War and the Vietnam War.

Hồ Chí Minh: Vietnamese revolutionary leader who founded the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and led its independence movement. Hồ Chí Minh appointed Giáp to command the Việt Minh’s armed forces and remained his political leader.
People's War: A strategy that mobilizes a population and sustains armed struggle through political organization and prolonged conflict. Giáp’s forces relied on mass support and a long war rather than matching French or U.S. firepower directly.
Việt Minh: A Vietnamese independence coalition founded in 1941 under communist leadership to resist foreign rule. Giáp organized and commanded its armed forces during the struggle against French rule.
Battle of Điện Biên Phủ: The decisive 1954 battle in which Việt Minh forces defeated France’s principal base in northwestern Vietnam. Its outcome established Giáp as a central figure in the end of French rule in Indochina.
Lê Duẩn: Vietnamese communist leader who served as general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Vietnam from 1960 to 1986. Lê Duẩn’s leadership shaped North Vietnam’s wartime strategy while Giáp held senior military and government roles.

William Westmoreland: U.S. Army general who commanded American forces in Vietnam from 1964 to 1968. Westmoreland’s attrition strategy opposed the protracted-war approach associated with Giáp.
Siege of Điện Biên Phủ: The 1954 battle in which Việt Minh forces captured a fortified French base in northwestern Vietnam. Giáp directed the siege that forced France to negotiate an end to its Indochina war.
