Vocal registration

Vocal registration is the coordination of distinct ranges and vibratory patterns within a singing voice. Registers differ in vocal-fold behavior and how singers produce and connect them.

Vocal folds: Paired elastic tissues in the larynx that vibrate as air passes through them to produce voiced sound. Their vibration patterns and degree of engagement help distinguish vocal registers.
Pitch: The perceptual quality of a sound that corresponds chiefly to its fundamental frequency. Register ranges are often described by pitch, though pitch alone does not define a register.
Chest voice: A vocal register or production quality commonly associated with lower and middle pitches and a speech-like sound. It is a familiar register label associated with one region of vocal production.
Vocal timbre: The distinctive tonal quality of a voice or sound, shaped by its spectrum and resonances. Timbre describes perceived sound quality, not the underlying register coordination.
Larynx: A cartilage-supported organ in the neck that houses the vocal folds and regulates airflow into the trachea. It contains the vocal folds whose coordination changes across registers.
Fundamental frequency: The lowest frequency in a periodic sound, perceived in voiced sounds as their principal pitch. It helps quantify the pitches associated with register ranges.
Head voice: A vocal register or production quality commonly associated with higher pitches and a resonant sensation in the head. It names a commonly taught coordination for higher singing.
Vocal resonance: The reinforcement of sound frequencies by resonant spaces in the vocal tract. Resonance can change register color without itself defining a register.
Vocal tract: The resonant passage formed by the throat, mouth, and nasal cavities through which voiced sound travels. Shaping its resonances can strengthen or smooth sounds across register transitions.
Tessitura: The range of pitches in which a singer or instrument performs most comfortably and frequently. A singer’s tessitura describes comfortable range, which is distinct from registration.
