Vocalization

A vocalization is a sound produced by an animal through its vocal structures. Animals use vocalizations for communication and functions such as navigation, courtship, and warning.

Sound production: The physical process by which a source generates sound waves. Vocalizations begin when animals set air, tissue, or other materials vibrating.
Animal communication: The transfer of information between animals through signals and responses. Vocalization is one channel animals use to influence one another's behavior.
Sound: A mechanical disturbance that travels through a material medium as a wave. Vocalizations are sounds whose production begins with animal activity.

Human speech: A structured vocal communication system using language-specific sounds and rules. Speech is a specialized human form of vocal behavior, not a synonym for all vocalization.
Syrinx: The sound-producing organ of birds, located where the trachea divides into the bronchi. Birds produce many vocalizations with this specialized organ rather than a mammalian larynx.
Birdsong: Structured vocal behavior in birds, often used in courtship and territorial defense. Birdsong is a well-studied example of vocalization serving several social functions.
