Vocational education

Vocational education develops practical skills and knowledge for specific occupations or trades through technical instruction, workplace learning, or apprenticeships.

Apprenticeship: A system of training that combines paid work with instruction toward competence in an occupation. It joins workplace practice with structured learning in a traditional vocational route.
Competency-based education: An educational approach in which progress depends on demonstrating defined knowledge and skills. It makes occupational mastery, rather than time spent in class, the measure of progress.
Guild: An association of craftspeople or merchants that historically regulated training, standards, and entry into a trade. Guilds established earlier systems for controlling craft learning and occupational entry.
Liberal arts education: An educational approach emphasizing broad study across the humanities, sciences, and arts. It contrasts occupational specialization with broad intellectual preparation.
Technical school: A school that provides specialized instruction in technical subjects and occupational skills. It delivers vocational learning in a dedicated educational setting.

Industrial Revolution: A period of major economic and technological change beginning in Britain in the eighteenth century. Industrialization increased demand for workers trained in specialized technical skills.
Academic education: Education centered on theoretical knowledge and scholarly subjects rather than direct preparation for a particular occupation. The distinction highlights different balances of theory and occupational practice.
Work-based learning: Learning that takes place through real or simulated work tasks and workplace participation. It connects occupational instruction directly to work practice.
Skills assessment: A process for measuring a person's ability to perform specified tasks or demonstrate defined competencies. It tests whether training has produced the abilities an occupation requires.
