Voice-over

Voice-over is spoken narration heard over images, whether or not the speaker appears on screen. It can convey information, shape a story, or create a particular point of view.

Narration: The spoken or written act of telling a story or recounting events. Voice-over is one way narration can be delivered.
Documentary film: A nonfiction film that presents or interprets real people, events, or conditions. Documentaries often use voice-over to supply context or guide an argument.
On-screen presenter: A person who appears in a video while speaking directly to the camera or audience. An on-screen presenter is visible during delivery; a voice-over speaker need not be.
The Shawshank Redemption: A 1994 drama film directed by Frank Darabont and adapted from a Stephen King novella. Red’s retrospective narration frames Andy’s story and its meaning.
Voice-over narration: Narration spoken over a film or video’s images, usually by a speaker outside the visible scene. This is the common documentary and instructional form of voice-over.
News broadcasting: The production and transmission of news reports through television, radio, or digital media. News voice-over lets narration accompany footage when a reporter is not shown speaking.
Dialogue: Spoken exchange between characters or participants in a dramatic or nonfiction work. Dialogue usually belongs to the depicted scene, unlike narration laid over it.
The Wonder Years: An American television series that follows Kevin Arnold’s adolescence through adult retrospective narration. Adult Kevin’s voice-over contrasts remembered events with later understanding.
Diegetic sound: Sound that originates within a story’s world and can be heard by its characters. Voice-over often sits outside the story world, unlike dialogue heard by characters.
Audiovisual translation: The translation of dialogue and other verbal content in film, television, and digital media. Voice-over is one method for translating speech while retaining the original audio.
