Volga Bulgaria

Volga Bulgaria was a medieval state in the middle Volga and Kama regions, inhabited mainly by Turkic Bulgars. Its ruler adopted Islam in the 10th century, linking the state to the wider Muslim world.

Old Great Bulgaria: A seventh-century polity of Bulgar tribes north of the Black Sea, associated with the ruler Kubrat. Its breakup preceded Bulgar migrations that helped establish communities along the middle Volga.
Ahmad ibn Fadlan: A tenth-century Abbasid diplomat and writer whose account describes a mission to the Volga Bulgars. His report records the ruler’s conversion and details of Bulgar society in 922.
Mongol invasion of Volga Bulgaria: The Mongol conquest of Volga Bulgaria in the 1230s, which incorporated the region into the Jochid realm. The invasion ended the state’s independent political existence.
First Bulgarian Empire: A medieval state in the Balkans founded by Bulgars and Slavs, flourishing from the seventh to eleventh centuries. It shared Bulgar origins with Volga Bulgaria but developed in the Balkans under different conditions.
Kubrat: A seventh-century ruler traditionally associated with the unification of Bulgar tribes in the Pontic steppe. Bulgar migration traditions connect the dispersal after his polity to the Volga Bulgars’ origins.

Danube Bulgaria: The medieval Bulgar polity established south of the Danube, precursor to the Bulgarian state. This western Bulgar realm is distinct from the Volga state despite their related origins.
Bulgars: A group of Turkic-speaking peoples known from the Eurasian steppe during late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Volga Bulgaria formed as one major Bulgar political community.
