Volga River

The Volga is Europe’s longest river, flowing south through western Russia and draining into the Caspian Sea. Its basin has shaped Russian transport, settlement, industry, and history.

Volga basin: The drainage area whose streams and rivers flow into the Volga and its tributaries. Its watershed defines the lands and communities connected to the river.
Volga Hydroelectric Cascade: A sequence of dams and reservoirs on the Volga that generates electricity and regulates flow. Its dams transformed the river’s flow and energy production.
