Volgograd

Volgograd is a city in southwestern Russia on the Volga River. Formerly known as Stalingrad, it was the site of a decisive World War II battle.

Battle of Stalingrad: A major 1942–1943 World War II battle in which Soviet forces defeated German and allied Axis troops at Stalingrad. The battle gave the city its enduring place in military and national history.
Tsaritsyn: The historical name of the settlement that became Volgograd, used from its founding until 1925. It identifies the city before its Soviet-era renamings.
