Volhynia

Volhynia is a historical region of Eastern Europe, centered on the upper Horyn and Styr river basins. Its territory lies chiefly in present-day Ukraine, with part in Poland.

Volhynian Principality: A medieval East Slavic principality centered on Volodymyr in the region of Volhynia. It was one of the principal political formations that gave Volhynia its medieval identity.
Volodymyr: A city in northwestern Ukraine, historically known as Volodymyr-Volynskyi and formerly called Volodymyr. The city was a political center of the medieval Volhynian principality.
Ukrainians: An East Slavic people and the principal national group in modern Ukraine. Ukrainians form the majority population across most of present-day Volhynia.
Volhynia during World War II: The period of German occupation and armed conflict in Volhynia from 1941 to 1944. Occupation, resistance, and intercommunal violence profoundly altered the region’s population.
Galicia (Eastern Europe): A historical region of central and eastern Europe, now divided chiefly between Poland and Ukraine. Galicia was Volhynia’s close neighbor and was joined with it in a medieval kingdom.
Kingdom of Galicia–Volhynia: A medieval East Slavic kingdom formed by the union of Galicia and Volhynia in the late twelfth century. Its rulers united Volhynia with Galicia and made the region a major eastern European power.
Lutsk: A city in northwestern Ukraine and the administrative center of Volyn Oblast. Lutsk became a key regional center and preserves landmarks of Volhynia’s political history.
Poles: A West Slavic people whose historic homeland includes Poland and neighboring regions. Polish communities were numerous in Volhynia before and during the Second World War.
Operation Vistula: The 1947 forced resettlement of Ukrainians from southeastern Poland to territories in the country’s west and north. The operation followed wartime conflict in the borderlands and reshaped Polish-Ukrainian communities nearby.
Polesia: A lowland region of forests and wetlands spanning parts of Belarus, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine. Polesia borders Volhynia to the north and shares its riverine landscape.
