Volta River

A major West African river formed by the confluence of the Black Volta and White Volta, flowing south through Ghana to the Gulf of Guinea.

Black Volta: A major tributary of the Volta River that rises in Burkina Faso and flows south toward Ghana. It is one of the two main rivers whose confluence forms the Volta.
Lake Volta: A large reservoir in Ghana created by the Akosombo Dam on the Volta River. The reservoir occupies much of the river’s middle course.
Volta River Authority: Ghana’s public institution responsible for developing and operating electricity generation and related infrastructure. It operates key hydropower facilities on the Volta system.
Akosombo resettlement: The relocation of communities displaced by the creation of Lake Volta in Ghana. Filling the reservoir submerged settlements and required large-scale resettlement.
White Volta: A major tributary of the Volta River that rises in Burkina Faso and flows south through Ghana. Its meeting with the Black Volta marks the beginning of the main river.
