Vow

A vow is a solemn promise or pledge that binds its maker to an undertaking. It may be made to a deity, a religious community, or another person.

Marriage vow: A pledge made by spouses to one another as part of a marriage ceremony. Marriage vows make mutual commitment the central promise.
Monasticism: A religious way of life organized around disciplined practice and separation from ordinary social life. Monastic life is often structured by formal vows.
Intent: A mental state of purpose or determination to act in a particular way. A vow expresses an intention as an explicit commitment.
Affirmation: A solemn declaration made in place of an oath, without invoking a deity. An affirmation can carry formal force without sacred language.
Vow of silence: A commitment to refrain from speaking, often for religious or contemplative reasons. This vow gives silence the force of a chosen obligation.

Pledge: A serious promise or undertaking, especially one made publicly or to an organization. A pledge often resembles a vow but need not carry the same solemn or sacred weight.
Oath: A solemn declaration that invokes a sacred or authoritative witness to affirm truth or commitment. An oath resembles a vow but often emphasizes testimony or formal duty.
Vow of poverty: A religious commitment to renounce personal ownership or the pursuit of wealth. It makes simplicity and renunciation the substance of a vow.
