Voyeurism

Voyeurism is sexual interest in observing people who are unaware of being watched. It can describe a consensual fantasy, a pattern of behavior, or a diagnosable disorder depending on context.

Paraphilia: A persistent, intense sexual interest that differs from conventional sexual interests. Voyeurism is classified as a paraphilic interest, which is not by itself a mental disorder.
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders: A classification and diagnostic manual published by the American Psychiatric Association. Its criteria distinguish voyeuristic interest from voyeuristic disorder.
Privacy: The condition of being free from unwanted intrusion into personal life or spaces. Voyeuristic acts violate privacy when they expose intimate activity to observation without permission.
Sexual privacy: A person's ability to control access to information or observation concerning their intimate life. Voyeurism directly challenges control over who can witness intimate activity.
Consensual non-consent: A negotiated sexual role-play in which participants consent in advance to simulate nonconsensual activity. It may portray unawareness, but all participants agree to the scenario beforehand.
Voyeuristic disorder: A paraphilic disorder involving recurrent voyeuristic urges or behavior that causes distress or involves nonconsenting people. This diagnosis applies only when voyeuristic interest meets specific clinical criteria.
Sexual arousal: A set of psychological and bodily responses associated with sexual interest or stimulation. Arousal linked to observing unsuspecting people is central to the concept's clinical definition.
Hidden camera: A camera concealed or disguised so that its presence is not readily apparent. Hidden cameras are one technology used to record people without their knowledge.
Trauma: Lasting psychological effects that can follow exposure to a deeply distressing or threatening event. Discovery of covert observation or recording can leave subjects feeling violated and unsafe.
Voyeuristic photography: Photography that derives sexual interest from observing or depicting people without their awareness or consent. It is a specific form of voyeuristic conduct involving image-making.
