W. H. R. Rivers

William Halse Rivers Rivers (1864–1922) was an English anthropologist, neurologist, and psychiatrist whose fieldwork in Melanesia and care for traumatized soldiers shaped British social science and psychiatry.

A. C. Haddon: Alfred Cort Haddon was a British anthropologist and zoologist who led the 1898 Cambridge expedition to the Torres Strait. Haddon recruited Rivers for the expedition that redirected his research toward anthropology.
Shell shock: Shell shock was a term used during and after the First World War for psychological and neurological symptoms associated with combat. Rivers treated soldiers diagnosed with this contested wartime condition.
Torres Strait Expedition: The 1898 Cambridge Anthropological Expedition to the Torres Strait was a multidisciplinary study of island communities between New Guinea and Australia. Rivers conducted psychological and anthropological research on the expedition.
Social anthropology: Social anthropology studies social relations, institutions, and cultural practices through comparative and ethnographic research. Rivers helped establish its field-based methods in Britain.
C. G. Seligman: Charles Gabriel Seligman was a British physician and anthropologist who studied peoples in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. Seligman joined Rivers’s Torres Strait fieldwork and helped establish its collaborative approach.
Repression: Repression is the exclusion of distressing thoughts or impulses from conscious awareness. Rivers used repression to explain how traumatic memories could contribute to symptoms.
Genealogical method: The genealogical method records relationships among individuals to study kinship, marriage, and social organization. Rivers used genealogies to analyze kinship and social structure in the Torres Strait.
The History of Melanesian Society: The History of Melanesian Society is Rivers’s 1914 study arguing that cultural change in Melanesia involved migration and successive population movements. This work became his most influential and controversial account of cultural change.
Bronisław Malinowski: Bronisław Malinowski was a Polish-British anthropologist who developed influential methods of long-term ethnographic fieldwork. Malinowski’s later fieldwork in Melanesia developed within the research tradition Rivers helped establish.
Psychoanalysis: Psychoanalysis is a theory and method of treating psychological distress through the interpretation of unconscious processes. Rivers drew on psychoanalytic ideas while rejecting some of their claims about war neuroses.
