W. S. Gilbert

William Schwenck Gilbert (1836–1911) was an English playwright, librettist, and poet best known for comic operas created with composer Arthur Sullivan.

H.M.S. Pinafore: A comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan satirizing the British Navy and social hierarchy. Its 1878 success established the partnership’s appeal through nautical satire and memorable songs.
