Wad Madani

Wad Madani is a city in central Sudan on the Blue Nile and the capital of Gezira State. It is a major urban center in the country’s agricultural heartland.

Blue Nile: The eastern headstream of the Nile, flowing northwest from Lake Tana in Ethiopia into Sudan. Wad Madani stands on this river, whose waters support settlement and irrigation nearby.
Irrigation: The artificial supply of water to land to help crops grow. Irrigation from the Blue Nile underpins farming in the surrounding Gezira region.
Anglo-Egyptian Sudan: The condominium government of Sudan by Britain and Egypt from 1899 to 1956. Wad Madani expanded as an administrative and commercial center during this period.
Sudanese civil war (2023–present): An armed conflict that began in Sudan in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The war brought fighting and major disruption to Wad Madani and Gezira State.

University of Gezira: A public university in Wad Madani, Sudan, established in 1975. Its presence makes the city a center for higher education in Gezira State.
