Wadjet

Wadjet is an ancient Egyptian cobra goddess associated with protection, kingship, and the Nile Delta. She was often depicted as a rearing cobra and represented by the royal uraeus.

Uraeus: The upright cobra emblem worn on the crowns of Egyptian rulers as a sign of divine protection and royal authority. The uraeus made Wadjet’s protective cobra form a visible emblem of kingship.
Buto: An ancient city in the Nile Delta, known in Egyptian as Per-Wadjet and associated with the goddess Wadjet. Buto was Wadjet’s principal cult center and preserved her name in its Egyptian designation.
Serpopard: A mythical long-necked feline depicted in ancient Near Eastern and Egyptian art. Its hybrid form contrasts with Wadjet’s direct use of the cobra as a divine image.
Buto temples: Sanctuaries at Buto dedicated to local Delta deities, including Wadjet. The temples anchored her cult in the city most closely associated with her worship.

Cobra: A venomous snake, several species of which can spread a hood and raise the front of the body defensively. The cobra’s threatening posture supplied Wadjet with a recognizable protective form.
Pyramid Texts: Ancient Egyptian funerary spells inscribed in royal pyramids, beginning in the late Fifth Dynasty. These spells place Wadjet within the religious language surrounding royal protection and the afterlife.
Two Ladies: The paired patron goddesses of Upper and Lower Egypt, Nekhbet and Wadjet, represented together in royal titulary. Wadjet’s partnership with Nekhbet expressed the king’s rule over both regions.
Lower Egypt: The northern region of ancient Egypt, centered on the Nile Delta. Wadjet became the patron goddess of the kingdom’s northern region.
