Knowra Waitangi Tribunal Waitangi Tribunal A permanent commission of inquiry established in 1975 to investigate claims concerning breaches of the Treaty of Waitangi. It makes recommendations and reports on how Crown actions relate to the Treaty.
Treaty of Waitangi : A 1840 agreement between Māori rangatira and the British Crown, with Māori and English texts that differ in key respects. The Tribunal assesses Crown conduct against this agreement and its principles.
Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975 : New Zealand legislation establishing the Waitangi Tribunal and defining its powers and jurisdiction. The Act established the Tribunal in response to demands for Treaty accountability.
Māori land claims : Claims concerning the loss, control, or use of land by Māori and the Crown's role in that history. Land grievances have featured prominently in Tribunal investigations.
Office of Treaty Settlements : A former New Zealand government office that negotiated historical Treaty settlement agreements with Māori groups. Unlike the Tribunal, it negotiated settlements on behalf of the Crown.
Māori renaissance : A resurgence of Māori language, cultural practice, political organization, and public presence from the mid-twentieth century onward. Tribunal work contributed to wider recognition of Māori history and cultural claims.
Waitangi Tribunal claim : A formal allegation that Crown conduct breached the Treaty of Waitangi or its principles and caused prejudice to Māori. Claims are the cases the Tribunal investigates.
Māori land loss : The extensive transfer and alienation of Māori land through Crown policy, warfare, legislation, and transactions. Historic land loss supplied the central grievance behind many early claims.
Māori fisheries claims : Claims that Crown policies and laws impaired Māori rights to fisheries and customary fishing. These claims led to major Tribunal findings on fisheries and Treaty obligations.
Waitangi Tribunal Historical Claims : Claims concerning Crown conduct before 21 September 1992, made eligible for Tribunal inquiry after a 1985 amendment. The 1985 expansion let the Tribunal investigate historical grievances, not only recent conduct.
Māori language revitalization : Efforts to strengthen the use and transmission of te reo Māori across homes, education, and public life. The Tribunal's 1986 language report supported recognition of te reo Māori as a taonga.
