Walkability

Walkability is the degree to which an area’s built environment supports safe, convenient, and appealing travel on foot. It depends on street design, land use, connectivity, and destinations.

Street connectivity: The extent to which streets form connected routes rather than isolated segments or dead ends. Connected routes shorten walking trips and give pedestrians more ways to reach destinations.
Pedestrian level of service: A framework for assessing how well streets accommodate pedestrian movement and comfort. It translates street conditions into measures that can guide walkability evaluation.
Walk Score: A commercial index that scores locations by proximity to nearby amenities. It offers a familiar, destination-based proxy for comparing neighborhood walkability.
Physical activity: Bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure. More walkable places can make routine movement part of everyday travel.
Automobile dependency: A pattern in which daily activities rely heavily on travel by private car. It describes the opposite travel pattern from neighborhoods where walking serves routine trips.
Mixed-use development: Development that places different land uses, such as homes, shops, and workplaces, in proximity. Nearby destinations make walking practical for more everyday trips.
Traffic calming: Street design and management measures that reduce vehicle speeds or traffic dominance. Slower traffic can make crossings and sidewalk edges feel safer for pedestrians.
Walkability index: A composite measure combining built-environment features associated with walking. Indices let researchers compare places, while their chosen inputs affect the result.
Health equity: The fair distribution of opportunities to attain good health across populations. Unequal pedestrian conditions can limit access to exercise, services, and transit.
Car-oriented development: Land use and street design organized primarily around automobile access and movement. Its separated destinations and vehicle-focused streets often undermine pedestrian convenience.
