Wall of Sound

A dense recording and production technique developed by Phil Spector in the early 1960s, layering multiple instruments and voices into a unified, reverberant sound.

Double tracking: A recording technique in which the same part is performed or recorded twice and combined. Duplicated parts thicken the arrangement, helping create the technique’s massed sound.
Phil Spector: An American record producer and songwriter who developed the Wall of Sound. Spector conceived and supervised the productions that made the technique identifiable.
Be My Baby: A 1963 song by the Ronettes, produced by Phil Spector. Its opening drum pattern and dense backing became a signature example of the sound.
