Walter Baade

Walter Baade was a German-American astronomer whose distinction between two stellar populations led to revised estimates of cosmic distance and scale.

Cosmic distance ladder: A sequence of methods for measuring distances from nearby astronomical objects to the most remote galaxies. Baade’s revised Cepheid calibration changed a key rung and doubled the estimated distances to galaxies.
Stellar population: A group of stars classified by shared properties such as age, chemical composition, or location in a galaxy. Baade’s central discovery was that galaxies contain distinct stellar populations.
Göttingen University: A German university where Walter Baade studied astronomy and earned his doctorate. Baade’s academic training there preceded his move to the United States.
Fritz Zwicky: A Swiss-American astronomer known for proposing neutron stars and developing ideas about supernovae and dark matter. Baade and Zwicky jointly introduced the term supernova and proposed its role in producing neutron stars.

Harlow Shapley: An American astronomer who mapped the Milky Way and studied variable stars and globular clusters. His Cepheid calibration belonged to the distance-scale tradition Baade’s work revised.
Supernova: A powerful stellar explosion that can briefly outshine an entire galaxy. Baade and Zwicky helped establish supernovae as a distinct class of astronomical event.
