Walter Pater

Walter Pater (1839–1894) was an English essayist and critic whose prose and ideas about art, beauty, and experience helped shape the late Victorian Aesthetic movement.

Aestheticism: A movement that valued art and beauty as ends in themselves, rather than chiefly as instruments of morality or utility. Pater’s essays became central to the movement’s English expression.
