War elephant

A war elephant is an elephant trained and equipped for military use, including carrying fighters, charging opponents, and intimidating troops.

Elephant mahout: An elephant handler who directs an elephant through trained signals and commands. Mahouts controlled war elephants in battle and managed their training and care.
Battle of Hydaspes: A battle fought in 326 BCE between Alexander the Great and King Porus near the Hydaspes River. Porus deployed elephants that disrupted Macedonian horses and tested Alexander’s formation.
Mahabharata: An ancient Sanskrit epic whose layered composition spans centuries and whose narrative includes warfare and kingship. Its battle narratives preserve a major literary tradition of elephants in Indian warfare.
Cavalry: Soldiers who fight mounted on horses or other riding animals. Cavalry offered speed and maneuverability without the bulk and supply demands of elephants.

Battle of Zama: A battle fought in 202 BCE in which Scipio Africanus defeated Hannibal in North Africa. Hannibal’s elephants charged through lanes Scipio’s troops had deliberately opened.
Achaemenid Empire: An ancient Persian empire founded by Cyrus the Great in the sixth century BCE. Persian forces encountered elephant warfare through campaigns and contacts in South Asia.
War chariot: A horse-drawn vehicle used to carry fighters into battle in ancient warfare. Chariots and elephants both carried combatants, but differed sharply in mobility and terrain needs.
Pyrrhic war elephant: A war elephant associated with the armies of Pyrrhus of Epirus during his campaigns against Rome. Pyrrhus’s elephants contributed to victories that cost his army heavily and shaped the term “Pyrrhic victory.”
