War in the Vendée

A royalist and Catholic uprising in western France against the French Republic during the French Revolution, suppressed by republican forces. Its repression became one of the Revolution’s most contested episodes.

Levée en masse: A 1793 decree that mobilized France’s population and resources for war. The levy’s conscription provisions helped trigger resistance in the Vendée.
