War of Attrition

A 1967–1970 conflict between Egypt and Israel, fought mainly across the Suez Canal front through artillery duels, air raids, and raids by ground forces.

Suez Canal: An artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Its eastern bank became the principal front between Egyptian and Israeli forces.
Six-Day War: The June 1967 war in which Israel fought Egypt, Jordan, and Syria and captured territory from all three. Egypt's defeat and loss of the Sinai Peninsula set the conflict's immediate context.
Anwar Sadat: Egypt's president from 1970 to 1981, succeeding Gamal Abdel Nasser. Sadat inherited the conflict and accepted the ceasefire shortly after becoming president.
Ceasefire of 7 August 1970: The ceasefire that ended active fighting between Egypt and Israel in August 1970. It halted the conflict without resolving control of Sinai or the Arab-Israeli dispute.
Egypt–Israel peace treaty: The 1979 treaty in which Egypt and Israel established peace and provided for Israel's withdrawal from Sinai. It resolved the territorial conflict left open by the 1970 ceasefire.
Operation Badr (1969): An Egyptian military operation in 1969 that established fortified positions along the Suez Canal. It strengthened Egypt's canal defenses during the conflict.
Sinai Peninsula: A peninsula in northeastern Egypt between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea. Israel occupied Sinai in 1967, while Egypt sought to recover it.
Moshe Dayan: An Israeli military leader and politician who served as defense minister from 1967 to 1974. As defense minister, Dayan oversaw Israel's response to Egyptian attrition and air attacks.
Operation Badr (1973): The Egyptian military operation that began the crossing of the Suez Canal in the October 1973 war. Egypt's canal-front experience in the earlier conflict informed its later attack.
