War of the Eight Princes

A series of civil wars among princes of China’s Western Jin dynasty, fought from 291 to 306. The conflicts weakened imperial authority and helped set the stage for the Disaster of the Yongjia era.

Empress Jia Nanfeng: The politically powerful wife of Emperor Jin Hui, who dominated the Western Jin court before her overthrow in 300. Her seizure and defense of court power helped launch the first major phase of the wars.
Jin Wu Emperor: The founder and first emperor of the Western Jin dynasty, who reunified China in 280. His succession arrangements and empowerment of princes shaped the court that later fractured.
Disaster of the Yongjia era: The crisis of 311, when Xiongnu forces captured Luoyang and devastated the Western Jin court. The princely wars weakened the dynasty before this catastrophic invasion and collapse.
Rebellion of the Seven States: A rebellion by seven kingdoms against the Han emperor in 154 BCE, suppressed by imperial forces. Like the Jin wars, it involved powerful imperial relatives, but it ended with stronger central control.
Sima Lun: A Western Jin prince who seized the throne in 301 and was soon defeated by a coalition of rival princes. His brief usurpation prompted the coalition that widened the conflict.
Regency of Yang Jun: The brief regency of Yang Jun after Jin Wu Emperor’s death in 290, ended by a palace coup. The coup against Yang Jun brought Empress Jia and rival princes into the struggle for control.
Fall of Luoyang: The capture and destruction of Luoyang by Xiongnu forces in 311 during the Disaster of the Yongjia era. It exposed the consequences of a court unable to recover from years of civil conflict.
War of the Eight Princes of Sui: A modern label sometimes applied to conflicts among Sui imperial princes, distinct from the Western Jin wars. The similar name can obscure that the well-known War of the Eight Princes concerned Western Jin.
Sima Jiong: A Western Jin prince who helped overthrow Sima Lun and later became the dominant regent at court. His rise after the 301 coup created a new target for rival princes.
Western Jin dynasty: A Chinese dynasty that ruled from 266 to 316 and briefly reunified the empire. The civil wars were an internal crisis of this dynasty and accelerated its collapse.
