War of the First Coalition

A series of conflicts from 1792 to 1797 in which revolutionary France fought shifting alliances of European powers. French victories expanded the republic’s influence and reshaped the political map of Europe.

Battle of Valmy: A French victory over Prussian forces on 20 September 1792 that halted their advance toward Paris. Its outcome helped secure the new republic during the coalition’s opening campaign.
French Revolution: A period of political and social upheaval in France beginning in 1789 that ended the monarchy and transformed the state. The revolution created the new regime whose survival and expansion provoked foreign intervention.
Napoleon Bonaparte: A French military and political leader who became emperor of the French in 1804. His Italian campaign of 1796–1797 forced Austria toward peace.
Sister republics: Republics established or supported by revolutionary France in territories it controlled or influenced. French military gains produced dependent republics across parts of Italy and the Low Countries.
Battle of Fleurus: A French victory over Austrian forces in present-day Belgium on 26 June 1794. The victory enabled France to occupy the Austrian Netherlands and shift the war’s balance.
Declaration of Pillnitz: An 1791 statement by Austria and Prussia expressing concern for Louis XVI and warning of consequences if he were harmed. French revolutionaries treated the declaration as evidence of a foreign threat.
Lazare Carnot: A French engineer, military organizer, and revolutionary politician who served on the Committee of Public Safety. He helped organize the mass mobilization and armies that sustained France’s war effort.
Cisalpine Republic: A republic established by France in northern Italy in 1797 from territories conquered during Napoleon’s Italian campaign. Its creation embodied France’s political gains as the First Coalition ended.
French Revolutionary Wars: Wars fought by France against changing European coalitions from 1792 to 1802. The First Coalition war is the opening phase of this broader conflict.
War of the Pyrenees: The conflict between revolutionary France and Spain from 1793 to 1795. Spain entered the coalition war after France declared war on it in 1793.
