Knowra War of the League of Cambrai War of the League of Cambrai A series of conflicts beginning in 1508 in which European powers first allied against Venice, then fought one another for territory and influence in Italy.
League of Cambrai : An alliance formed in 1508 by Pope Julius II, France, the Holy Roman Empire, and Spain against Venice. Its members launched the war with a coordinated campaign to divide Venetian territory.
Venetian mainland empire : The territories Venice acquired on the Italian mainland, especially during the fifteenth century. Its expansion alarmed neighboring powers and supplied the coalition with lands to claim.
Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor : The Holy Roman Emperor from 1508 to 1519, who sought to expand Habsburg influence in Italy. He joined the anti-Venetian coalition while also pursuing his own claims in northern Italy.
Republic of Venice : A maritime republic centered on Venice that governed territories in the Adriatic and northern Italy. It lost much of its mainland territory in 1509, then recovered much of it through diplomacy and arms.
Battle of Agnadello : A 1509 battle in which French forces defeated the Venetian army near the town of Agnadello. The French victory broke Venice’s ability to resist the first coalition’s invasion.
Pope Julius II : The pope from 1503 to 1513, known for military campaigns to expand and defend the Papal States. He promoted the anti-Venetian alliance and later redirected it against France.
Louis XII of France : King of France from 1498 to 1515, whose Italian campaigns sought control of Milan and Naples. His military successes against Venice helped initiate the war’s first phase.
Duchy of Milan : A state in northern Italy, centered on Milan, contested by France and the Habsburgs. Control of Milan remained a central prize as the war’s alliances shifted.
Holy League (1511) : An alliance formed in 1511 by Pope Julius II against France, joined by Venice, Spain, and other powers. Julius II redirected the conflict by turning former allies against French control in Italy.
Treaty of Blois (1504) : An agreement between France and the Holy Roman Empire that included plans for a partition of Venetian territory. Its proposed division helped turn opposition to Venice into a concrete coalition project.
