War of the Oranges

A brief 1801 conflict in which Spain, allied with France, invaded Portugal and forced it to cede territory and close its ports to Britain.

Treaty of San Ildefonso (1800): A secret 1800 agreement in which Spain and France renewed their alliance against Britain. Its alliance enabled Spain to join France in pressuring Portugal.
Manuel Godoy: A Spanish statesman who served as chief minister under Charles IV and led Spain during the War of the Oranges. Godoy directed Spain's campaign and became associated with its rapid victory.
Olivenza: A town on the Spanish-Portuguese border, ceded by Portugal to Spain in 1801. Its transfer was the war's principal territorial consequence.
Alentejo: A region of southern Portugal bordering Spain. Spanish forces occupied parts of Alentejo during the brief invasion.
Continental System: Napoleon's policy of using European trade restrictions to weaken Britain. The war anticipated Napoleon's effort to make Portugal shut its ports to British trade.

Treaty of Madrid (1801): A 1801 agreement between Spain and Portugal that confirmed the cession of Olivenza to Spain. It supplemented the peace terms concerning Portugal's territorial loss.
Elvas: A fortified Portuguese city near the Spanish border, opposite Badajoz. Its frontier position made it a focal point of the campaign's military pressure.
Anglo-Portuguese Alliance: A longstanding diplomatic and military alliance between England or Britain and Portugal. Portugal's ties to Britain made it the target of the Franco-Spanish ultimatum.
John VI of Portugal: King of Portugal from 1816 to 1826 who served as regent from 1799. As regent, he governed Portugal when it faced the Franco-Spanish ultimatum.
