Wars of the Three Kingdoms

A series of interconnected conflicts in England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1639 to 1651 over political authority, religion, and relations among the kingdoms.

Bishops' Wars: Two conflicts between Charles I and Scottish Covenanters in 1639 and 1640 over church governance and royal authority. The Scottish resistance to Charles I’s religious policies began the chain of crises.
Long Parliament: The English Parliament summoned in 1640 that remained in existence, with interruptions, until 1660. It challenged royal authority and shaped England’s war effort and constitutional settlement.
Charles I of England: King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1625 until his execution in 1649. His religious policies and resistance to parliamentary limits provoked opposition across his kingdoms.
First English Civil War: The armed conflict in England and Wales between royalists and Parliamentarians from 1642 to 1646. It was the largest English phase of the interconnected conflicts.
Execution of Charles I: The public beheading of Charles I outside the Banqueting House in Whitehall on 30 January 1649. The king’s execution marked Parliament’s rejection of monarchy as the immediate settlement.
National Covenant: A 1638 Scottish declaration defending Presbyterian worship and opposing religious innovations imposed by Charles I. Its signatories organized resistance to the king’s attempt to reshape Scottish worship.
Covenanters: Scottish Presbyterians who swore covenants defending their church and political liberties against royal religious policies. Their army and political alliances made Scotland a decisive force in the conflicts.
Oliver Cromwell: An English Parliamentarian commander who became Lord Protector of the Commonwealth in 1653. His military leadership and campaigns in Ireland and Scotland shaped the wars’ final phase.
Second English Civil War: The 1648 resurgence of royalist uprisings and Scottish invasion against Parliament’s rule in England. It showed that Charles I’s defeat had not ended armed resistance or the Scottish role.
Commonwealth of England: The republican government established in England after the monarchy was abolished in 1649. It replaced royal government after the wars and extended its authority into Ireland and Scotland.
