Warsaw Pact

The Warsaw Pact was a Cold War military alliance of the Soviet Union and seven Eastern European states, established in 1955 and dissolved in 1991.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization: A military alliance founded in 1949 by North American and European states for collective defense. NATO’s expansion to include West Germany in 1955 prompted the Soviet Union to establish the Pact.
Combined Command of the Armed Forces of the Warsaw Treaty Organization: The unified military command established to coordinate the armed forces of Warsaw Pact members. It placed alliance planning and operational coordination under Soviet-led command.
Nikita Khrushchev: The Soviet leader from 1953 to 1964 who initiated major changes in Soviet domestic and foreign policy. He led the Soviet Union when the Pact was founded and during the 1956 Hungarian uprising.
Hungarian Revolution of 1956: A nationwide Hungarian uprising against Soviet-backed rule, suppressed by Soviet forces in November 1956. Soviet intervention demonstrated that alliance power could be used to restore a threatened member regime.
Eastern Bloc: The group of European states aligned politically and economically with the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The Pact provided the Eastern Bloc with its principal formal military alliance.
West German rearmament: The rebuilding of West Germany’s armed forces after the Second World War. West Germany’s accession to NATO was the immediate catalyst for the Pact’s formation.
Unified military command: An arrangement in which forces from multiple states operate under a shared command structure. The Pact’s Combined Command was a regional example of this military arrangement.
Leonid Brezhnev: The Soviet leader from 1964 to 1982, a period marked by political stability and intervention in Eastern Europe. His government used the alliance to enforce Soviet control during the 1968 Czechoslovak crisis.
Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia: The August 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by Soviet-led Warsaw Pact forces. This operation showed the alliance’s capacity to intervene collectively against political reform.
Iron Curtain: The political and ideological division separating Soviet-aligned Eastern Europe from Western Europe during the Cold War. The Pact’s military boundary reinforced this broader division of Europe.
