Pacific Northwest : A region of western North America centered on Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. Washington is a core part of this region, whose climate and identity cross national and state borders.
Oregon Country : A region claimed by several powers and jointly occupied by Britain and the United States before its division in 1846. Washington emerged from the northern portion of this contested region.
Seattle : Washington’s largest city and a major Pacific port, technology center, and cultural hub. Its growth has made the state’s western urban corridor a center of population and employment.
Hanford Site : A former U.S. nuclear weapons production complex along the Columbia River in southeastern Washington. Its plutonium production and lasting radioactive contamination made cleanup a major state and federal responsibility.
Cascade Range : A volcanic mountain range extending from British Columbia through Washington and Oregon into Northern California. The range divides Washington into a wet western side and a drier eastern side.
Oregon Treaty : The 1846 agreement that established the boundary between British North America and U.S. claims west of the Rocky Mountains. It placed the future Washington Territory south of the 49th parallel under U.S. control.
Spokane : The largest city in eastern Washington and a regional center for commerce, health care, and education. It anchors the state’s inland economy, far from Seattle’s coastal influence.
Mount St. Helens : An active volcano in southwestern Washington whose 1980 eruption caused widespread destruction and 57 deaths. The eruption transformed landscapes and communities and remains a defining event in the state’s modern history.
Columbia River : A major river flowing from British Columbia through Washington and along part of the Washington–Oregon border. It forms much of Washington’s southern boundary and supports irrigation, shipping, and hydropower.
Washington Territory : A U.S. territory established in 1853 from the northern part of Oregon Territory. It was the direct political predecessor to Washington’s state government.
