Water beetle

A beetle adapted to live in water for part or all of its life. Aquatic beetles occur in several families and use varied ways to breathe, swim, and hunt.

Plastron respiration: A method of underwater gas exchange in which a thin air layer held against an animal’s body draws oxygen from water. Some water beetles maintain a persistent air film that lets them remain submerged.
Coleoptera: The insect order comprising beetles, distinguished by hardened forewings called elytra. Water beetles are aquatic members of this exceptionally diverse insect order.
Whirligig beetle: A beetle in the family Gyrinidae that swims rapidly on the water surface, often in groups. Unlike submerged divers, whirligig beetles specialize in the air–water boundary.
Aquatic biomonitoring: The assessment of aquatic ecosystem condition using organisms or biological measurements. Beetle communities can indicate habitat structure and changes in freshwater conditions.
Air bubble: A pocket of air carried underwater by an animal, providing a temporary supply of oxygen. Many diving beetles carry air beneath their wing cases and replenish it at the surface.
Elytron: One of a beetle’s hardened forewings, which usually covers and protects the hindwing. The space beneath the elytra can shelter air in diving species.
Rove beetle: A beetle in the family Staphylinidae, most species of which have short wing covers and live on land. Most rove beetles are terrestrial, though some inhabit shorelines and aquatic margins.
Bioindicator: An organism or biological response used to assess environmental conditions. Water beetle presence and community composition can provide evidence about local habitat quality.
Hydrofuge hairs: Water-repellent body hairs that trap air and limit wetting. These hairs help some water beetles retain an air layer while submerged.
Insect respiration: Gas exchange in insects, usually conducted through a network of tracheal tubes opening at spiracles. Water beetles modify access to this air-breathing system while underwater.
