Water diversion

Water diversion redirects water from its natural course or source for human use, usually through engineered channels, pipes, or control structures.

Diversion dam: A low dam that raises or controls a river to direct water into a canal or intake. It diverts river flow into conveyance systems without necessarily storing a large reservoir.
Irrigation: The artificial application of water to soil or crops. Agriculture is a major use of diverted river and groundwater supplies.
Environmental flow: A water regime maintained in rivers to support ecosystems and human livelihoods. It represents the downstream flow needs that diversion plans must accommodate.
Water conservation: Practices that reduce water use or protect water resources from depletion and degradation. Conservation can meet demand without increasing withdrawals from a source.
Intake structure: An engineered opening that admits water from a river, lake, or reservoir into a conduit. Its gates and screens regulate the water entering a diversion system.
Municipal water supply: Water provided for domestic, commercial, and public uses in towns and cities. Diversion can bring source water to populations far from rivers or reservoirs.
River fragmentation: The interruption of a river's continuity by barriers or altered channels. Diversion structures can divide habitats and disrupt movement along a river.
Water reuse: The use of treated or untreated wastewater for a subsequent beneficial purpose. Reuse supplies users by cycling existing water rather than diverting a new source.
Canal: An artificial waterway built to convey water for irrigation, transport, drainage, or supply. Canals carry diverted water from its source toward farms, cities, or storage.
Hydroelectricity: Electricity generated by converting the energy of moving or falling water. Diversion channels can route flow through turbines before returning it downstream.
