Water heating

Water heating is the process of raising water’s temperature for domestic, commercial, industrial, or other uses. Systems supply heat directly or transfer it from another source.

Heat transfer: The movement of thermal energy from a warmer region or substance to a cooler one. Water gains energy through conduction, convection, radiation, or combinations of these processes.
Domestic hot water: Heated water supplied for household uses such as bathing, washing, and cleaning. It is the main everyday application of residential water-heating systems.
Solar water heating: A system that uses solar collectors to transfer captured solar energy to water. It replaces or supplements fuel and grid electricity with collected sunlight.
Water heating energy consumption: The energy used to raise water to service temperatures and maintain its supply. It is a substantial part of energy demand in many homes and commercial buildings.
Specific heat capacity: The heat required to raise the temperature of a unit mass of a substance by one degree. Water’s high specific heat capacity means substantial energy is needed to warm it.
Resistance heating: The production of heat when electric current passes through a resistive material. Electric water heaters commonly use immersed resistance elements to warm stored water.
District heating: A system that distributes heat from centralized sources to multiple buildings through a network. Some networks provide hot water or heat water at connected buildings.
Electric water heating: Water heating that uses electricity, commonly through resistance elements or a heat pump. It contrasts with systems that burn fuel at the point of use.
Legionella: A genus of bacteria that can cause Legionnaires’ disease, especially when inhaled in contaminated aerosols. Water temperature and system management influence Legionella growth and exposure risk.
Temperature: A physical quantity that indicates how hot or cold a substance is. Water heating is defined by increasing this measurable property.
