Water puppetry

Water puppetry is a Vietnamese theatrical tradition in which puppeteers manipulate wooden figures across a water-covered stage, often with live musical accompaniment.

Water puppet stage: A shallow, water-filled performance space that conceals the mechanisms and puppeteers operating water puppets. Its screen and submerged controls hide performers while giving figures room to move.
Red River Delta: A fertile lowland region in northern Vietnam formed by the Red River and its distributaries. The tradition developed in this densely settled, water-rich region.
Thăng Long Water Puppet Theatre: A Hanoi theatre established in 1969 that presents Vietnamese water puppetry to local and international audiences. It is a prominent permanent venue for performances of the tradition.
Tễu: A comic, often bald male character who serves as a familiar commentator in Vietnamese water puppetry. He introduces performances and addresses audiences through jokes and commentary.
Vietnamese cultural heritage: The inherited practices, objects, and traditions associated with Vietnam’s communities and history. Water puppetry is widely presented as a distinctive element of Vietnamese heritage.
Water puppet: A carved wooden figure designed to be manipulated on the surface of water. Its buoyant body and concealed controls make movement across the pool possible.

The Legend of the Restored Sword: A Vietnamese legend in which the emperor Lê Lợi returns a magical sword to a turtle in Hoàn Kiếm Lake. Its mythic turtle and lake are recurring subjects in Hanoi water-puppet shows.
Intangible cultural heritage: Practices, expressions, knowledge, and skills that communities recognize as inherited cultural heritage. The tradition is sustained through performance knowledge rather than stage objects alone.
