Water well

A water well is a borehole or dug shaft that reaches groundwater for extraction or monitoring. Its design connects an aquifer to the surface while limiting sediment entry and contamination.

Aquifer: A permeable geological formation that stores and transmits groundwater. The well draws from this saturated formation.
Water table: The upper surface of the saturated zone in an unconfined aquifer. Its depth determines how far a shallow well must reach to encounter groundwater.
Water supply: The provision of water for domestic, agricultural, industrial, or public use. Wells provide a local or municipal source when groundwater is usable.
Artesian well: A well tapping a confined aquifer in which water rises above the aquifer's upper boundary under pressure. It is a pressure-driven well type, not simply a deeper version of every well.
Cone of depression: A cone-shaped lowering of groundwater levels around a pumping well. It shows how pumping can draw down water beyond the well itself.
Well screen: A perforated or slotted section of well casing that admits groundwater while retaining surrounding sediment. It lets water enter the well without allowing most aquifer material to pass through.
Porosity: The fraction of a material's volume occupied by pores or fractures. Pore space provides the storage from which a well can draw water.
Irrigation: The artificial application of water to soil to support crop growth. Agricultural wells supply water where rainfall or surface water is insufficient.
Driven well: A shallow well made by driving a small-diameter screened pipe into unconsolidated ground. Its installation differs from drilling or excavating a larger well shaft.
Land subsidence: The gradual sinking of the land surface, sometimes caused by groundwater withdrawal and aquifer compaction. Excessive pumping can compact sediments and permanently lower the ground.
