Wave theory of light

Wave theory describes light as a propagating wave, accounting for effects such as interference, diffraction, and polarization.

Electromagnetic wave: A disturbance of electric and magnetic fields that propagates through space and carries energy. Modern wave theory identifies light as an electromagnetic wave.
Christiaan Huygens: A Dutch physicist and astronomer who developed an influential wave theory of light in the seventeenth century. His wavefront construction offered an early systematic account of reflection and refraction.
Wavelength: The distance between successive points of equal phase in a wave. Light’s wavelength sets the scale of its interference and diffraction patterns.
Particle theory of light: A description of light in terms of discrete particles rather than continuous waves. Particle models explain observations, such as the photoelectric effect, that classical waves cannot.
Superposition principle: A rule that overlapping waves combine by adding their displacements or field amplitudes. Adding light waves explains how they reinforce or cancel.
Augustin-Jean Fresnel: A French physicist whose mathematical work explained diffraction and advanced the wave theory of light. His calculations made wave theory quantitatively successful against corpuscular explanations.
Frequency: The number of complete oscillations a periodic process makes per unit time. Light’s frequency determines its color and relates to wavelength through its speed.
Wave–particle duality: The quantum principle that light and matter exhibit both wave-like and particle-like behavior. Modern physics retains wave predictions while also requiring particle descriptions.
Interference: A pattern of reinforcement and cancellation formed when waves overlap. Light’s alternating bright and dark fringes reveal wave superposition.
Corpuscular theory of light: The view that light consists of particles or corpuscles traveling through space. It was the main historical rival to light’s wave description.
