Web mapping

Web mapping is the creation and delivery of maps through web technologies. It combines geographic data, map rendering, and network services to make maps accessible in browsers and other connected applications.

Tile map service: A network service that supplies map images or vector tiles for display at specified geographic areas and zoom levels. It delivers map content in small pieces that browsers can request as users pan and zoom.
Geographic information system: A system for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying geographically referenced data. Web mapping draws on the data and operations developed in GIS.
OpenStreetMap: A collaborative project that creates and distributes a free, editable map of the world. Its open geographic data supports many web maps and mapping services.
Static map: A map delivered as a fixed image without interactive map controls or dynamic content. It contrasts with web maps that respond to user input or update from services.
Web Map Service: An Open Geospatial Consortium standard for requesting georeferenced map images from a server. It lets a web client request rendered map images from compatible servers.
Geographic data: Information associated with locations on Earth's surface, represented as coordinates, features, or raster cells. It supplies the locations and attributes that web maps visualize.
Google Maps: A web and mobile mapping service offering maps, directions, and location-based information. It is a widely used example of consumer-facing web mapping.
Desktop GIS: Geographic information system software installed and run on a local computer. It performs many mapping tasks locally rather than delivering maps through a browser.
Web Map Tile Service: An Open Geospatial Consortium standard for serving predefined georeferenced map tiles. It standardizes tiled map delivery for web clients.
GeoJSON: A JSON-based format for encoding geographic features and their attributes. It is a common way to transfer feature data to browser-based maps.
