Web syndication

Web syndication distributes website content for reuse or display on other websites, commonly through structured feeds such as RSS or Atom.

RSS: A family of XML-based web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content. RSS is one of the most widely used formats for publishing syndicated website updates.
RDF Site Summary: An early RSS format based on the Resource Description Framework, released in 1999. Its release helped establish automated summaries as a way to distribute website updates.
Podcast: A series of digital audio episodes distributed for on-demand listening, often through a feed. Podcast feeds use syndication to announce episodes and deliver media enclosures.
Web syndication license: Terms that specify how syndicated content may be copied, displayed, or adapted. Technical access to a feed does not by itself grant permission to reuse its contents.
Web feed: A structured document that lists recent or updated content from a website. A feed packages site updates so other services can retrieve and display them.
Netscape: A software company whose Netscape Navigator browser helped popularize the early Web. Netscape developed the first RSS format for its My Netscape portal.
Blog: A website or section of a website that publishes entries, usually in reverse chronological order. Blogs commonly syndicate new posts so subscribers can follow updates elsewhere.
Canonical link element: An HTML element indicating a preferred URL for substantially duplicate pages. Canonical links identify duplicate-page relationships, while syndication distributes content to other sites.
XML: A markup language for encoding structured data in a text-based format. RSS and Atom use XML to make feed entries machine-readable.
Dave Winer: An American software developer and writer who helped develop and promote RSS. Winer's RSS work shaped a widely adopted path for web syndication.
