Weberian apparatus

The Weberian apparatus is a chain of small bones linking the swim bladder to the inner ear in certain fishes. It transmits vibrations and improves hearing sensitivity.

Swim bladder: A gas-filled organ in many fishes that regulates buoyancy and can also produce or receive sound. Its sound-induced vibrations provide the input that the Weberian chain carries toward the ear.
Ostariophysi: A major group of ray-finned fishes that includes carps, catfishes, characins, and their relatives. The Weberian apparatus is characteristic of this broad fish group.
Günther's law: A nineteenth-century proposal identifying homologies among the Weberian ossicles and vertebral elements. It is an early framework for interpreting the chain’s skeletal origins.
Fish hearing: The detection and processing of sound by fishes through inner-ear and, in some species, accessory structures. The apparatus is a specialized route for transmitting sound to the fish ear.

Auditory sensitivity: The minimum sound level an organism can detect at a given frequency. The apparatus increases sensitivity to sound in species that possess it.
Otic capsule: The bony or cartilaginous enclosure surrounding the inner ear in vertebrates. The apparatus conducts vibration to the inner ear housed within this enclosure.
Tripus: A posterior Weberian ossicle that connects the chain to the swim bladder in many ostariophysan fishes. It provides a key attachment through which swim-bladder motion enters the chain.
