Welsh literature

Welsh literature comprises literary works produced in Wales or by Welsh writers, in Welsh, English, and other languages. It includes traditions shaped by Wales’s distinct languages, history, and culture.

Y Gododdin: An early Welsh heroic poem mourning warriors killed at the Battle of Catraeth. Its celebrated elegies are among the earliest surviving works of Welsh literature.
Dafydd ap Gwilym: A fourteenth-century Welsh poet renowned for his innovative cywyddau and nature poetry. His sophisticated verse marks a high point in medieval Welsh poetry.
Welsh poetry: Poetry written in Welsh, extending from medieval bardic verse to contemporary forms. Poetry has been a continuous and influential strand of Welsh-language writing.
English-language literature: Literary works written in English across national, regional, and historical traditions. English-language writing from Wales belongs to this broad literary tradition as well as Welsh culture.
Mabinogion: A collection of medieval Welsh prose tales preserved in manuscripts from the fourteenth century. These tales preserve a foundational body of medieval Welsh storytelling.
Goronwy Owen: An eighteenth-century Welsh poet whose work helped renew the strict-metre bardic tradition. His poetry inspired later efforts to revive Welsh literary forms.
Cynghanedd: A system of sound-patterning in Welsh poetry based on consonant correspondence and stress. Its intricate rules define much of the tradition’s formal verse.
Welsh-language literature: Literary works written in Welsh, from medieval poetry to contemporary fiction and drama. This language-specific tradition is one major part of Welsh literature.
Eisteddfod: A Welsh festival of literature, music, and performance, often featuring competitive artistic events. Eisteddfodau helped sustain Welsh-language poetry and public literary culture.
Kate Roberts: A Welsh-language writer known for short stories and novels about life in rural Wales. Her concise stories became central works of modern Welsh-language prose.
