Wen Tingyun

Wen Tingyun was a late Tang dynasty poet and lyricist celebrated for ornate ci poetry. His work helped shape the early development of the ci genre.

Ci poetry: A Chinese lyric form written to set melodic patterns, especially prominent during the Song dynasty. Wen’s surviving lyrics are among the earliest influential examples of this form.
Huajian ji: A tenth-century anthology of ci poetry by writers associated with the former Shu court. It preserves many lyrics attributed to Wen and helped define his poetic reputation.
Late Tang dynasty: The final period of the Tang dynasty, conventionally dated from the An Lushan Rebellion to the dynasty’s fall in 907. Wen’s career unfolded during the dynasty’s political fragmentation and cultural transition.
Wei Zhuang: A late Tang and Five Dynasties poet and statesman known for poetry and ci lyrics. He is commonly paired with Wen Tingyun as an early master of ci.

Ornate style: A literary manner marked by elaborate diction, dense imagery, and finely crafted description. Wen’s lyric writing is especially associated with richly patterned language and sensory detail.
Tang dynasty poetry: The diverse poetic tradition produced in China during the Tang dynasty, including regulated verse and older song forms. Wen inherited its literary vocabulary while developing a reputation for lyric composition.
Zhao Chongzuo: A court official of former Shu traditionally credited with compiling the Huajian ji. His anthology gathered lyrics by Wen and helped transmit the early ci tradition.
Song dynasty ci: The flourishing tradition of Chinese lyric poetry during the Song dynasty, composed to tune patterns. Song poets inherited a genre whose early prestige was linked to Wen’s lyrics.
