Werner Heisenberg

Werner Heisenberg (1901–1976) was a German theoretical physicist who helped found quantum mechanics through matrix mechanics and formulated the uncertainty principle.

Quantum mechanics: The physical theory describing matter and radiation at atomic and subatomic scales. Heisenberg helped establish this framework by replacing classical trajectories with quantum observables.
Matrix mechanics: An early formulation of quantum mechanics that represents physical quantities with matrices and their products. Heisenberg developed it in 1925 from relations among observable atomic transitions.
Niels Bohr: A Danish physicist whose atomic model and quantum ideas helped shape modern physics. Bohr mentored Heisenberg and influenced his approach to atomic theory.
Wolfgang Pauli: An Austrian-born theoretical physicist known for the exclusion principle and major contributions to quantum theory. Pauli’s correspondence and criticism helped Heisenberg refine early quantum mechanics.
Quantum field theory: A framework combining quantum mechanics with special relativity by treating particles as excitations of fields. It extends the quantum foundations to relativistic particle physics beyond Heisenberg’s original formulations.
Atomic spectrum: A pattern of frequencies emitted or absorbed when atoms change energy states. Measured spectral lines supplied the observable data that matrix mechanics was built to explain.
Canonical commutation relation: The operator relation between position and momentum, expressed as their commutator equaling iℏ. Noncommuting position and momentum operators underlie the uncertainty relation in quantum mechanics.
Max Born: A German physicist who helped develop quantum mechanics and interpret its mathematical formalism. Born recognized matrix structure in Heisenberg’s 1925 work and helped formulate it mathematically.
Erwin Schrödinger: An Austrian physicist who developed wave mechanics as a formulation of quantum theory. His wave mechanics offered a rival-looking formulation that proved mathematically equivalent to matrix mechanics.
Nuclear fission: The splitting of a heavy atomic nucleus into lighter nuclei, releasing energy and neutrons. Fission made Heisenberg’s wartime nuclear research consequential, though Germany did not build an atomic bomb.
