Wernicke's area

Wernicke's area is a brain region traditionally associated with understanding spoken and written language, usually in the dominant hemisphere's posterior temporal lobe. Its boundaries and precise role remain debated.

Wernicke–Geschwind model: A model linking brain regions through pathways to explain language functions and classic aphasias. It gives Wernicke's area its familiar role in a broader account of language processing.
Wernicke's aphasia: A language disorder marked by fluent but often poorly meaningful speech and impaired comprehension. It is the clinical syndrome most closely associated with damage in this region.
Carl Wernicke: A German neurologist who described a language-comprehension disorder associated with posterior temporal brain damage. His clinical and anatomical work gave the area its name.

Superior temporal gyrus: A ridge on the upper surface of the temporal lobe involved in auditory processing. Parts of this gyrus are often included in anatomical descriptions of Wernicke's area.
Broca's aphasia: A nonfluent language disorder often marked by effortful speech and relatively preserved comprehension. Its contrasting speech pattern shaped the traditional division between language production and comprehension.
