West Berlin

West Berlin comprised the American, British, and French sectors of Berlin during the Cold War. It remained politically distinct from West Germany and was surrounded by East German territory.

Berlin Airlift: The 1948–1949 operation that supplied West Berlin by air during the Soviet blockade. It kept the western sectors supplied when the Soviet Union cut their land access.
Allied-occupied Germany: Germany’s division into occupation zones administered by the United States, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union after World War II. The occupation framework also divided Berlin, although it lay deep inside the Soviet zone.
Ernst Reuter: A German Social Democratic politician who served as West Berlin’s governing mayor from 1948 to 1953. His public appeal during the blockade helped rally support for the city.
Ich bin ein Berliner: John F. Kennedy’s 1963 declaration of solidarity with West Berlin in a public speech. The phrase made support for the enclave a memorable statement of Western commitment.

West Germany: The Federal Republic of Germany, established in 1949 from the western occupation zones. West Berlin was closely linked to this state but did not formally become part of it.
