West Coast hip-hop

West Coast hip-hop is a regional hip-hop tradition rooted in California, especially Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. It encompasses distinct local scenes, sounds, and artists, including N.W.A and Dr. Dre.

Gangsta rap: A hip-hop style whose lyrics often depict street violence, policing, and life in disadvantaged communities. Its rise through N.W.A made it one of the tradition’s defining lyrical modes.
N.W.A: An influential Compton rap group whose confrontational songs brought gangsta rap to a national audience. Their records made the Los Angeles scene a national force.
